Three reasons why Derek Carrier deserves a roster spot

Route-running ability

Carrier is by no means the next amazing tight end to take the place of Rob Gronkowski or Travis Kelce as the leagues best tight end. However, his route running skills are very good for his size. He outran a safety for the touchdown while having six inches on the guy. His size and speed make him a combination that’s worth keeping around.

Blocking ability

While watching the game Thursday night against the Cardinals, I saw him making some great blocking plays. He got some push on Terrell Suggs, a veteran from the Ravens who has been a pass-rushing monster in the past. What was more impressive was he blocked one-on-one with him as well on a passing play in the second quarter with Mike Glennon on the field.

Finding open space

While what led the Raiders win in the desert was ultimately the quarterback play, which stood out to me was Carrier’s ability to get open. He only caught 2 passes for 9 yards but one was a perfectly run route and the other was a first down on a third and 6. He was hit 4 yards from the first down marker and pushed through three defenders in the secondary to get that first down.

Tight end is a position that can make or break an offense. Carrier is a player that’s versatile and can be useful in a Gruden offense which uses tight-ends and play-action passes to change the pace on offense.

Carrier could be a fantastic addition to the offense and can contribute to other places than the stat board.
