The Backup QB Battle

Derek Carr will be suiting up Week 1 for sure, but who is the next man up on the depth chart? Through camp and three preseason games so far, the answer to that question is still very much up in the air. Mike Glennon is likely the favorite to take the backup duties, but last week in Winnipeg Nathan Peterman put on a great performance. Surely, Gruden took noticed and loved every bit.

Glennon looked to have the number two spot on lock after Week 2 of the preseason, where he went 11 for 14 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. But last week, Peterman completed 61 percent of his passes along with 230 yards passing and two touchdowns. Albeit it was on an 80-yard field, but a win is a win and it was a stellar outing.

Will Thursday night decide who stays and who goes? Or maybe we will see three quarterbacks as part of the 53-man roster. Gruden reiterated last week during postgame regarding the backup QB battle: “I have always kept three. Last time was the first time we didn’t. I’m not saying we’re going to keep two or three, but we’re going to try and keep the best 53 guys.”
