Oakland Raiders claim DeShone Kizer off waivers
By Nick Ellis
The Oakland Raiders continue to collect quarterbacks, this time adding DeShone Kizer off waivers.
The Oakland Raiders claimed former Packers QB Deshone Kizer. This move comes to a surprise to many, considering the Raiders already kept three quarterbacks on the roster in Carr, Glennon, and Peterman.
Kizer was a good QB in college for Notre Dame, but he has had no success in the NFL. Kizer was drafted by Cleveland in 2017, where he would start 15 games and throw for under 3,000 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.
Kizer then was moved to the Packers where in the little playing time he got, he threw 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Either way, the Raiders must have liked what they saw from Kizer when they played against him on an 80 yard field, even though he did not have a great preseason either.
Kizer recorded 273 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions this preseason, while throwing 0 touchdowns and 1 interception against the Raiders. With Carr as the starter, and Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman proving to be decent backups, this signing makes little to no sense.
The Raiders most likely will not keep four quarterbacks on the roster, but which QB will he let go? It has been stated that Glennon will be the backup QB, but Gruden wants to keep Peterman around to rebuild his NFL career.
This signing must come from Gruden liking Kizer in college, considering there has been nothing impressive about him in his NFL career. The Raiders could have signed any position, but they went with a fourth QB instead of adding depth to a position that really needed it.
The Raiders must be content with the roster that they currently have, but they can’t be done yet. The team only has a few linebackers on the roster, and they could use more help on the defensive line. Keep an eye out for news about the Raiders signing and trading players in the next few hours because there are moves that need to be made to finish up this roster.
