Karl Joseph is in a contract year, and if the Raiders decide to let him walk, they’ll need to find a replacement. Jonathan Abrams will come back next season and give them the physical box safety, but Ashtyn Davis can provide the deep range and ball skills to complement.

Davis is an active yet discipline safety who can play single high and 2 deep coverage. Davis is a former track star, so his speed covering the backend is not in question. The Raiders could also use his versatility as a former cornerback to their advantage in different packages.

He recognizes plays quickly and can break on routes with right angles and fluid hips. And when the ball is in the air, Davis can make plays, which is just what the Raiders need on the back end of their defense. He has also returned punts for Cal, so he has some ability once he gets the ball in his hands.

The issues with Davis generally center around his size. He’s under 200 pounds and not someone you want taking on blockers in the run game. Davis also tends to be more of a cutting at the legs tackler than a discipline wrapper, which can be tricky as the last line of defense. However, he has shown he’s willing to tackle, it just needs to be cleaned up.
