Las Vegas Raiders: Free agent running backs to backup Josh Jacobs
Free Agent Options
Jordan Howard
The former Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles running back Jordan Howard is set to be a free agent this offseason. In 2019 the Raiders lacked a punishing runner, and Howard provides the physical nature that Gruden loves in his players. His track record is an interesting one, as he stacked back-to-back 1,000 yard rushing seasons during his first two years in the NFL, but since then he’s been utilized in a backfield by committee. Howard is coming off a shoulder injury which sidelined him after week nine, but the 25-year-old rusher could be instrumental to the Raiders ground attack if his shoulder checks out okay.
Matt Breida
Matt Breida runs with a healthy balance of speed and power throughout his style of play. The former San Fransisco 49ers is set to become a restricted free agent this offseason as he may hit the open market for the first time in his young career. Breida has consistently shared a backfield with other rushers during his time in the NFL, and when doing so he’s been extremely productive given the limited amount of touches he’s gathered. The Raiders are in need of a secondary rusher who can keep the chains moving when Jacobs is given a break on the sideline. During his three-year career, Breida has averaged 5.0 yards per attempt which justifies the type of production and style of runner the Raiders roster could benefit from.
Keynan Drake
Keynan Drake enters free agency after setting career high’s in rushing yards (817) and touchdowns (8). Drake would provide the Raiders with a new-look change of pace runner who can also provide quality touches in the passing game. Drake has averaged 70.5 receptions per season, resulting in a total of 822 yards over the last two years. His forte isn’t about running in between the tackles, but his adequate speed and elusiveness in the open space is intriguing enough to consider him a viable option for Gruden’s offense.
