Round 5 Pick 149: Gardner Minshew, QB, Washington State

Original Pick: Hunter Renfrow, WR, Clemson

Going into the 2019 NFL Draft, many people expected the Raiders to draft a quarterback to replace Derek Carr with one of their three first round picks. The team did not do that, and in fact, they did not draft a quarterback at all. Derek Carr played decent in 2019, but there is no question that he had some flaws.

With this pick, the Raiders find a player that can not only push Derek Carr but may be able to take his spot if things go poorly. Gardner Minshew had a great rookie season, throwing for over 3,000 yards, 21 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. If Minshew could do that with the Jaguars, could he be even better with the Raiders?

Minshew Mania captivated the NFL landscape, and had he been brought in during the 2019 NFL Draft, at least there would be someone to challenge Carr for the starting role. The Raiders may decide to go that route in 2020, as there are some solid late-round options at quarterback as well, but Minshew looks like a Raider, and it would have been interesting.
