Las Vegas Raiders free agency profile: CB Byron Jones
By Matt Holder
When free agency officially begins in March, the Las Vegas Raiders are expected to be buyers and Byron Jones will be one of the best products on the market.
Whether it’s through the draft or free agency, it’s almost a guarantee that the Las Vegas Raiders are going to address the team’s secondary. Even with a young and promising cornerback in Trayvon Mullen, the Raiders can and will certainly look for an improvement on the other side of him. Byron Jones of the Dallas Cowboys is set to hit the open market and is a significant option for Las Vegas.
The Cowboys have made the mistake of drafting really well in recent years…*sarcasm font.* With Demarcus Lawrence, Zack Martin, Travis Frederick, Ezekiel Elliott, and Jaylon Smith recently inking big deals, Jerry and Stephen Jones have quite the conundrum on their hands. While Dallas has a significant amount of cap space heading into March, the organization will likely prioritize quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Prescott is reportedly looking for a blockbuster contract and is not interested in playing on the franchise tag. According to OverTheCap.com, Cooper is projected to make about $20 million per year so, between these two, Dallas’s cap space will diminish in a hurry.
As a result, Byron Jones will likely become a free agent.
Acquiring players via free agency can be a tricky situation because typically, the reason players are available is their current team no longer finds them valuable. However, this is not the case with Jones.
