Why Jones makes sense for the Raiders

Last season, he allowed a completion percentage of 53.1, 6.2 yards per target, and a passer rating of 87.7 when targeted. Those figures were equally as impressive in 2018: 52.5 percent, 7.3, and 84.7, respectively. It’s worth noting that Las Vegas’ new defensive line coach, Rod Marinelli served as the defensive coordinator for the cornerback’s entire career and clearly, the coach knows how to get the best out of him.

Jones excels in both man and zone coverage which make him a great fit in any defense, especially the Silver and Black’s.  Also, here’s a significant quote from his Pro Football Focus free agent profile that should pique the interest of defensive coordinator Paul Guenther: “he has also shown the ability to match up against tight ends when called upon.”

The team’s inability to cover tight ends has been well documented in recent years. This past season was no different as the Raiders allowed 71 receptions for 869 yards and nine touchdowns to the position. Given Jones’ ability to cover pass catchers of all varieties, the organization would be foolish to not make an offer to him at the very least.

Said offer better be high as Las Vegas will have to open up the checkbook to lure the defensive back. OverTheCap.com projects that he will receive a five-year $80 million contract, and at 27-years-old with a proven track record, he’s worth the investment. The Silver and Black are projected to have about $52 million in cap space so even with that startling amount, the organization can still pursue other big names on the market.
