2. The Raiders sign CB Byron Jones

Byron Jones would be the best cornerback the Raiders have had on their roster since Nnamdi Asomaugha. Jones would also, presumably, be the most expensive addition for the Raiders this offseason.

Jones is the best defensive back in this year’s free-agent class, and one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. He has 43 career passes defended and has been the leader of the Cowboys’ secondary since entering the league in 2015.

The Cowboys also have other priorities to consider when it comes to free-agency and re-signing their players. Two of their most important players, quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper are slated for long-term extensions, so the money may not be there for Jones in Dallas.

Meanwhile, the Raiders’ secondary is awful. It has been awful for a long time. According to NFL.com, the Raiders’ defense has been ranked in the bottom-15 of the league in every year since 2010, except one. Eventually, the issue needs to be addressed.

Current Raiders CB Trayvon Mullen seems to agree:

The Raiders, lately, have not been able to cover air.

Literally.

Byron Jones would be able to step into the Raiders’ defense and help mend their defensive woes immediately. If the Raiders want to make a splash in free-agency in their first year inhabiting Las Vegas, Byron Jones would not be a bad place to start.
