Could the Las Vegas Raiders take two receivers in the first round?
By Daniel Davis
The stage has been set for the Las Vegas Raiders to take two receivers in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft with the signings on the defensive side of the ball.
Despite adding a bunch of talent via free agency already this offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders have yet to address the wide receiver position. Of course, that could be due to the fact that the 2020 NFL Draft has arguably the deepest wideout class we have seen in quite some time, and the Raiders have some very high draft capital.
Looking at their needs heading into the draft, there is a chance they could use both of their first round picks, No. 12 and 19 on the wide receiver position. The Raiders are in prime position to get one of the elite at No. 12 for sure, and if there some of the better at the position available at 19, then this is a possibility.
I’ve said for many years that every team should draft a receiver at least once in every draft just to have that talent if they need it, but this could be a situation where draft expert Mike Mayock can’t pass up the opportunity to give Derek Carr two new weapons on the offensive side of the ball. The Raiders are picking at 12th and 19th in the first round which is prime picking for wide receivers in this draft.
Four of the first ten selections in the 2020 will likely be quarterbacks, as the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, and Los Angeles Chargers could all bring in a new signal-caller. The first round could shake out where Chase Young goes No. 2, and guys like Isaiah Simmons and Derrick Brown are taken before the Raiders pick at No. 12.
The Browns are likely to add an offensive tackle, and the New York Jets could target the defense, as they have big needs on that side of the ball. After that, it is the Raiders time to draft, and all of the elite wideouts in the class could be available.
Call me crazy, but there’s a way the Raiders could end up taking two receivers and give Derek Carr two new weapons to pair with one of the best offensive rookies in Josh Jacobs and a breakout star in Darren Waller.
At that point, there wouldn’t be an excuse for Carr and he would be forced to perform since he was given many weapons to work with on an offense that, when was in the right gear, could put up tons of points.
In the end, I have full faith the Raiders’ front office will lead the team to victory.
