Why he makes sense

Baun’s assimilation into an NFL defense is mostly a projection at this point. The position he played in college is a hybrid position not seen in the NFL. That being said, his unique skill set can help a defense in a variety of ways. He is often compared to Anthony Barr who currently plays at a Pro-Bowl level in a similar defense to what the Raiders run.

If Baun was on the Raiders defense and asked to play Sam Linebacker on first downs and then be a situational rusher on passing downs he could put his talents on display while learning the NFL game. Neither of those positions would be considered “starting” positions and Baun could sit back and play 20-30 snaps a game until he was needed for a larger role.

Much like we saw Clelin Ferrell be asked to play multiple roles in 2019, Baun could be asked to do the same. Indeed whichever team selects him in 2020 will be tasked with bringing out his versatility on the field.
