The Las Vegas Raiders added a quality defensive back in Damarious Randall, who brings a special blend of talent and experience to the defensive backfield.

After the deal with Eli Apple fell through, the Las Vegas Raiders had the cap room to make another deal. They continued to push hard for Damarious Randall formerly of Green Bay and Cleveland. The 5th year defensive back has played both CB and Safety during his NFL career. The talented cover man has produced over 60 impact plays (passes defensed, interceptions, sacks, tackle-for-loss) in 56 starts in his career.

His addition to the secondary boosts the pass coverage considerably. He also provides the versatility to play in multiple roles and coverages which allows Guenther to have more volume in his playbook than he has previously. Lets breakdown some aspects of Randall’s game.

Range

The most exciting part of Randall’s game going up against the competition in the AFC West is his ability to track the ball in the air and make plays from sideline to sideline. With Patrick Mahomes in the division this is a crucial skillset to have back at deep safety. Randall’s technique isn’t always perfect and he’ll at times give up his back and attempt to “speed turn” on routes. But the angles he takes and speed with which he runs underneath the pass can make up for any fundamental inefficiencies.

Play recognition

Randall makes some plays that can only be the result of great film study. Jumping routes in front of him and taking calculated chances is another great quality he possesses. Even though he had no interceptions in 2019, some of the plays he made on the ball to break up passes or make tackles for a stop were more impressive than his interceptions in 2018.
