The 1970s were the greatest years in the history of the franchise as they made the move from the AFL to the NFL with a bang. The Raiders were already one of the best teams in the AFL and made a smooth transition to the newly-merged league.

In their first year in the NFL, they advanced to the AFC Championship game and would go on to make the conference title game six times in the decade. They were the chief rivals of the vaunted Steel Curtain teams of the Pittsburgh Steelers and started one of the great rivalries in league history.

Along with six conference championship appearances, they made the playoffs seven out of 10 years, never finished below .500, and of course captured the ultimate prize with a victory in Super Bowl XI. They had stars all over the field and a remarkable twelve Pro Football Hall of Famers represented the Silver and Black on the field during that span.

Names like Gene Upshaw and Art Shell were immediately recognized for their greatness while others like Ken Stabler and Ray Guy took a bit longer to be recognized by the powers that be.
