Las Vegas Raiders quick reaction 2020 NFL Draft grade: Tanner Muse
The Las Vegas Raiders made an intriguing selection with the 100th pick, choosing the versatile Clemson Tiger, Tanner Muse
After trading down from the 91st pick to add another pick in Day 3, the Las Vegas Raiders used the 100th pick on a versatile player from the Clemson Tigers, Tanner Muse. Muse is an intriguing prospect that player primarily as a safety in college but also lined up at linebacker and may be asked to do so in Las Vegas.
Muse is precisely the sort of player that Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden have targeted as he is a tough, mature leader who can make an impact in a number of different ways. After redshirting his freshman year, Muse was a two-year starter at Clemson and did not miss a game in four seasons.
In his two years as a starter, Muse notched 149 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 16 passes defended, and 6 interceptions. His four interceptions in 2019 lead the team which is a nod to his instinctive reading of the game and his ball skills.
Muse brings excellent straight-line speed which he displayed at the NFL Combine with a 4.41 40, second among safeties, and showed impressive strength with 20 reps on the bench press. His strengths include his ability to diagnose run plays and using his fantastic speed to chase down ball carriers and make plays on the ball as he did with great effect at Clemson.
His weaknesses are mostly to do with a lack of fluidity that can see him struggle when isolated on receivers but that could point to a position change to linebacker where his speed and instincts can be an asset. Muse may not have the fluidity to cover a slot wide receiver but he certainly has the speed and size to cover tight ends or blow up opposing running backs in the backfield.
