Why the pick makes sense and the grade

The Bryan Edwards selection makes sense for all the reasons why selecting any talented wide receiver makes sense, because the Raiders need talent there. The trio that ended the season of Hunter Renfrow, Zay Jones, and Tyrell Williams are all decent to above average at best though Renfrow may develop in to a premier slot receiver if given the opportunity.

The Raiders also have a decision to make at quarterback on whether to move forward with Derek Carr, elevate Marcus Mariota, or go in another direction in the next few years so weapons are needed to make a proper evaluation. Carr had one of his better years in year two under Jon Gruden and that was with a revolving door at the WR position so bringing in a target like Edwards will only help evaluate him further.

As for Edwards himself, the knocks on him are issues with drops and explosiveness and some suspect downfield skills. However his strengths appear to outweigh the weaknesses as he is a smooth athlete who is physical enough to make contested catches and beat up on smaller defensive backs. He does not appear to be a burner like Bowden or Ruggs but given his size and strength he will give the Raiders another dimension in their passing attack.
