Las Vegas Raiders 2020 Opponent Review: New York Jets

How can the Raiders beat the New York Jets?

As we discussed the 2019 matchup was an absolute disaster for the Raiders in every facet of the game. Derek Carr had his worst statistical game of the season with just 127 yards on 27 attempts and added a pick-six when the game was already decided in the third quarter. The Raiders put up a good fight and were down just 10 at halftime but were sloppy and undisciplined from the start.

The Jets took advantage of the Raiders mistakes and once they were up by more than two scores it was clear the game was over and everything that happened after that was inconsequential. So what can the Raiders do to avoid the same grim fate in 2020?

Sam Darnold has thrown 28 interceptions in just 26 starts and that is where the Raiders can win this game. They were unable to generate much pressure and only recorded one sack and one QB hit against one of the worst pass blocking units in the NFL. Some of that had to do with the Jets sitting on their lead and only passing the ball 29 times but it was still an abysmal day for the Raiders pass rush.

If the Raiders defense can force Darnold in to throwing the interceptions he is becoming known for then that should help pave a path to victory. The Jets offense does not have the look of a juggernaut given their receiving weapons but it all starts and ends with their young quarterback.

On the other side of the coin, if the Raiders offense can finish drives against a solid defense they can simply try to outscore a mediocre Jets offense. The Jets added a good amount of depth on defense and they have some blue chippers in Adams and Mosley but this is a unit that was middle of the pack at best in every category except rush defense.

Playing games in December in cold weather cities is never straight forward for a West Coast team but this is will be a must-win for the Raiders if they hope to make playoff run in 2020. By taking care of the ball and forcing the Jets young QB in to some characteristic mistakes, the Raiders can leave New Jersey with a much needed victory.
