Ranking the top-five Raiders head coaches in franchise history
With the Raiders starting a new era in Las Vegas, we take a look back at the franchise’s top 5 coaches in the Silver and Black’s glorious history.
The Raiders were founded as a franchise in 1960 and in the 60 years since they have been one of the most prestigious teams in the history of football. Starting off in the AFL, the Raiders struggled initially but became one of the powerhouses in the AFL and captured the AFL title in 1967.
The transition to the NFL was a smooth one as the Raiders continued their success and captured their first Super Bowl ring less than 10 years after the merger. Success was the name of the game for the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders for the rest of the century and until the doldrums of the 2000’s, the Raiders were among the winningest teams in football history.
The common denominator in that success was legendary coach, GM, and owner Al Davis as he steered the Raiders to treasures for most of his reign. One of the signs of a great leader is the ability to identify others with a talent for leadership and Al Davis did just that with a number of legendary coaches over the years.
Over the course of their 60-year history the Raiders have had some of the best coaches in the game and we try to rank them as best we can while knowing that all of them were number one at some point in their careers.
