Darren Waller signed to long-term deal

During the 2019 NFL season, the Raiders made a long-term investment in tight end Darren Waller, who was in the middle of a breakout season. Waller finished the 2019 campaign with 90 catches for over 1,100 yards, becoming one of the better pass-catching tight ends in the league.

The deal for Waller was a three-year extension for $9 million per year, which by the current rate of elite tight ends being signed, is an outstanding deal for the team. This past week, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle each signed for deals that will pay them a lot more than Waller for what could be the same production.

Kittle will be paid around $15 million per season, while Kelce will earn around $14 million.

Signing players like Waller to these kind of extensions in their prime is how you turn your team into a franchise that is going to be solid for years to come. This is a guy who will be a cornerstone of the offense over the next three seasons, and as we have seen in today’s game, having this kind of tight end in your lineup can be a difference maker on a weekly basis.
