Las Vegas Raiders set for the long-term at cornerback position

The Las Vegas Raiders cornerback group is undergoing a major youth movement and it has the team set long term at the position

In a surprising move announced on August 31st, the Las Vegas Raiders released veteran cornerback Prince Amukamara just a few months after signing him to a one-year deal. Conventional wisdom suggested that Amukamara would be the starting corner opposite second-year player Trayvon Mullen until first round pick Damon Arnette was ready to take over the position.

Well, it appears that after just a few weeks of training camp, the Raiders either feel that Arnette was ready to be the starter from day one, or that Amukamara just does not have anything to offer at this point in his career. The former is more likely the case, as Amukamara was still a solid player in 2019, and there is little to suggest that his career is over at just 31-years-old.

Regardless of the reasons why the Raiders chose to cut Amukamara, his release now leaves the Raiders with an extremely young cornerback group that should leave them set at the position for years to come. The team has utilized the draft and free agency to revamp this group in recent offseasons, and they are in much better shape than they were before Mike Mayock got here.
