Behind the numbers: Derek Carr breaks Ken Stabler’s all-time TD record

Who caught all those touchdowns from Derek Carr?

151 touchdowns is a lot of touchdowns no matter how you slice it. It’s not quite Tom Brady and Drew Brees numbers but they have been in the NFL for two decades, so we can cut Derek Carr a break here as his career may still have a decade or so left in it.

The count began in Week 1 of 2014 with a 12-yard strike to Rod Streater, and was followed up with number two to James Jones in that same game. Number 50 came more than a year later in Week 15 2015 on a 19-yarder to Amari Cooper against the Green Bay Packers.

Number 100 came exactly two years after that in Week 14 2017 down at the goal line to Michael Crabtree who was one of Carr’s favorite red zone targets. And lastly, numbers 150 and the record breaker 151 came almost 3 years later in Week 4 2020 to Jason Witten and Nelson Agholor respectively.

Of those 151 touchdowns, 99 went to a wide receiver, 37 to a tight end, 7 to a fullback, 6 to a running back, and he even threw two to a left tackle! That left tackle is of course Donald Penn who was famous for his tackle-eligible plays on the goal line with both the Buccaneers and Raiders and has five touchdown catches in his 13 year career.

Michael Crabtree is the current leader in the clubhouse with 24 touchdown receptions courtesy of Carr with Amari Cooper and Seth Roberts at 18 and 13 respectively. The active leader on the Raiders is Foster Moreau with six already in his short career and Hunter Renfrow is just behind him with 5.

Andre Holmes is the only other player with double digit touchdowns but in total, Carr has thrown TD passes to 34 different players since 2014.

Carr is currently on pace to throw for 32 touchdown passes in 2020 so some of those active leaders will move up and down the leaderboard but we shouldn’t expect anyone to challenge Crabtree and Cooper until next season at least.

Next up let’s take a look at when and where Carr threw all those touchdowns.
