Finishing Strong

Of course, Most Valuable Player awards are not won in the first five games of the season, and a player usually needs to lead his team to the playoffs if he wants to take one home. Last year, the Raiders got out to a fast start to the season, faltering down the stretch, going 1-5 and seeing Carr get booed out of the stadium.

This year, Carr looks like a new man, backing up his talk before the season with the best play that Raiders fans have seen since his near-MVP 2016 campaign. Through the first five games, the Raiders have not played a team with a losing record, and have shocked the NFL landscape with the wins over Kansas City and the New Orleans Saints.

With a softer schedule ahead, all the stars are aligning for Carr to continue to put up solid numbers, and more importantly, put more notches in the win column. In addition, his Raiders team is getting healthier during the bye week, and could actually be at full strength when they welcome Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to town next Sunday night.

Beating Brady at home, yes the Brady that half of the fan base wanted this offseason, would be another huge achievement for Carr in a season where he has really turned heads. Gruden and Mayock were right to stick with him, because he is still young, has tremendous arm talent, and we could be witnessing the Raiders first MVP season since Rich Gannon.
