Las Vegas Raiders at Cleveland Browns: 3 things we learned in Week 8

Raiders Defense Still In Need Of Big Improvement

If it wasn’t Baker Mayfield throwing the ball today, or if Odell Beckham wasn’t injured last week, this might’ve been another loss for the Raiders.  The defense once again failed to generate any sacks, and the only quarterback hit came from defensive end Chris Smith.

I know Baker is a mobile quarterback and can get away from defenders even when they have him wrapped up, but that didn’t even come close to happening in this game.  If he had threw even one or two of his bad passes a little bit better, or his receivers didn’t have those inexcusable drops, the defense would’ve been carved up once again.

Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli needs to get this lack of pass rush fixed quickly because Justin Herbert isn’t missing those passes next week.  Damon Arnette is also clearly missed, as week after week Nevin Lawson is getting beat for touchdowns.

Lawson is solid when he plays the run because he’s a hard-nose tackler just like Trayvon Mullen, but always just a step slow when it comes to pass coverage. Hopefully Arnette will be back soon, as the Raiders enter a crucial three-game stretch against all AFC West opponents.
