Las Vegas Raiders 2020 Week 13 review: Studs and Duds

Duds – Part 2

Paul Guenther and his defense waver again

Coming into this game, the New York Jets were one of the worst offenses in the NFL and were on course to be historically bad. They were last in the league in scoring by more than 50 points and averaged just under 14 points a game before this week.

While there were some bright spots for this defense, mostly in individual performances, it is still unacceptable that the Raiders gave up 24 points to this offense and put up relatively little resistance on most of the Jets’ drives. When the Jets did not turn the ball over, they had eight other drives and they scored touchdowns on four of them.

It is easy to project at least another touchdown or two had the Jets not turned the ball over three times, which of course Las Vegas deserves credit for, but once the Jets got rolling they couldn’t be stopped by the Las Vegas defense. It is forgivable to give up four touchdowns to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs or Tom Brady and the Buccaneers, but the Jets have scored more than 20 points just 3 other times this season.

Paul Guenther will likely see out the season because it does not make sense to cut him loose at this point in the year but there is no reason he should be the defensive coordinator in 2021. He has done little to prove he deserves it and the defense appears to have regressed from 2019 despite an increase in talent.
