Derek Carr has played at a high level in every game this season except the Falcons game, and most people are missing key elements about the final play of the Jets game. Not many are realizing his recognition of the play, and his call for extra protection, as he stepped up beautifully in the pocket, and delivered a perfect ball to Ruggs with both feet off the ground.
Carr finished that game with 381 yards passing three touchdowns and added an extra score with his legs. His interception, which ricocheted off of Ruggs’ hands, was a low point, but he came to bring it all game long.
As I’ve written before, Carr is in total control of this offense, and finally has been in a system long enough for him to feel comfortable. Sunday will be his chance to not only inch his team closer to the playoffs but also another opportunity for him to make a statement in a season that has turned a lot of heads.
Every game for the rest of this season is a playoff game, the fans know it, and the players know it. It really doesn’t matter how you win in the NFL as long as you get the win, and the Silver and Black need to stack them down the stretch.
On Sunday, in the biggest game in the last four years for the franchise, the franchise quarterback is going to step up and be the difference. There has been a lot written about Carr in his seven years as a starter, but with a win on Sunday, he can continue to rewrite the narrative about him.
