Raiders FA WR targets: Curtis Samuel – Carolina Panthers

Curtis Samuel is a bit of an enigma, as it is not quite clear what his full-time position would be. Is he a slot receiver that you can count on to regularly make plays, or is he a gadget player that would be part of specific packages and gimmick plays?

It seems like Matt Rhule figured out how to use the former Ohio State Buckeye, as he had the best season of his career in 2020. Samuel had 77 catches for 851 yards, three touchdowns, and added 200 yards rushing and two touchdowns in 15 games. Perhaps the absence of Christian McCaffrey contributed to his increased usage but he made the most of the additional opportunities.

Rumors have been floating around that Samuel will be tempted to join his former college coach Urban Meyer with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and they certainly have the cap space to make it worth his while. Judging his value may be difficult because he has only one season of high level production but he fits the profile of an up and coming player that is yet to enter his prime.

The Raiders signing him would be a great addition to the receiver group, but it would not solve their problem of not having a true number one receiver. Samuel benefited greatly from the attention that DJ Moore and Robbie Anderson got from opposing defenses, so the jury is still out on him being the number one target.
