Raiders RT, Trent Brown

Trent Brown has been a mix of disappointing and excellent for the Raiders over his two seasons with the team so far. Brown has played just 16 games in two years, including 11 in 2019, but was a Pro Bowler that season despite his limited snaps.

This year, Brown was hampered with weight issues, injury issues, then had a nasty bout with COVID and a poorly placed IV that limited him to just five games. He deserves another chance to prove that he can still be a Pro Bowl-caliber player, and after paying him $36 million for 16 games, there is almost a sunk cost element to paying him “only” $14 million in 2021.

The Raiders know how vital it is to put a talented offensive line in front of Derek Carr, and even the best offenses can fall apart at the seams without the protection a player like Brown can provide. Gruden and company saw what life is like without Brown for several games, as they struggled to fill his shoes with swing tackles and guards masquerading as tackles.

If Brown does not live up to his contract for the third year running, then the Raiders will know for certain that it is time to cut bait but they need to give him a chance, with a proper offseason training program, to prove he can stay healthy. It will not be an easy decision as the team has glaring needs at other positions but unless they have a ready-made replacement they can’t afford to go cheap at that position.
