Raiders CB, Lamarcus Joyner

Lamarcus Joyner is another popular name as a supposedly easy cut for the Raiders to make as they look to shed salary to get under the cap. Unlike Brown, Joyner has been readily available for the Raiders and has missed just two games in two seasons since being signed as a free agent away from the Los Angeles Rams.

The issue with Joyner however has been that even though he plays regularly, he has not lived up to the contract that he signed in 2019. At face value, you could wonder why the Raiders would even consider keeping him around but the reason he has been underperforming is that the team insists on playing him out of position.

Joyner made his name with the Rams as a free safety and was among the better players at the position but when the Raiders gave him a $40 million contract, they decided he was better off at nickel cornerback. Considering the Raiders’ struggles at safety and playing the likes of Erik Harris at the position, keeping Joyner at cornerback and not playing him at his actual position was a mind-boggling decision.

The Raiders are in the market for a big-time safety to help clean up things in the defensive backfield but they already have one on the roster and he is locked in at a decent contract through the 2022 season. Rather than going out and signing an unknown commodity, the Raiders should plug Joyner back in at free safety and find another nickel cornerback to fill his role.
