Las Vegas Raiders: 10 free agent safeties to target
The Las Vegas Raiders looked like they were making some big changes at the safety position in the 2020 offseason. They brought in Jeff Heath from the Dallas Cowboys, who is a strong safety but can play both positions, and signed Damarious Randall to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with $1.5 million guaranteed.
Heath was brought in presumably to back up second-year safety Johnathan Abram and bring some depth to the position overall, and Randall appeared to have been brought in to start alongside Abram in place of Erik Harris.
Instead, the Raiders chose to release Randall and take the $1.5 million hit and keep rolling with Harris as the starter at free safety.
Randall landed in Seattle and contributed little and Harris struggled mightily and could not replicate the playmaking magic he had in 2019 with 3 interceptions and two pick-sixes. There was a revolving door at safety due to COVID and injuries, and by the end of the season, the Raiders brought in Daryl Worley, a cornerback by trade, to play safety and that did not go well.
All of this is to say that the Raiders need a major upgrade at the free safety position, and unless Abram becomes a better player and cuts down on the penalties, they may need an upgrade at strong safety soon as well.
Here are 10 current free agents who would fit the bill and could help the Raiders improve at the position.
