Uncertainty in the Raiders secondary

Let’s be honest, there were a lot of question marks in the Raiders secondary during the 2020 season, and it was essentially a rotating door. For the safeties, a lot of excitement was brought around Johnathan Abram, but he has yet to take the leap as a great safety.

Jeff Heath was signed in the 2020 offseason and was one of the better additions on the defense.

With so many different players out there like Erik Harris, Dallin Leavitt, and even Daryl Worley, the position group never had a true identity. Obviously, players like Abram have all the potential in the world, but there needs to be a true alpha in the secondary.

This will likely be addressed in the draft, but it’s not often a team can bring in a 25-year-old safety who is already among the best in the league. This would likely elevate the play of Abram, who could use a safety next to him that knows the game very well.

Regardless of if it is John Johnson III, or not, the Raiders will address this position in the 2021 offseason, and Gus Bradley will likely have a large say in who to bring in. A new scheme and players could help turn around the Raiders’ defensive struggles that have plagued them for so long is crucial this offseason, and Johnson would end up being money well spent.
