Raiders: 10 cut candidates to keep an eye on

  • DT Malcom Brown, New Orleans Saints
  • Cap savings if cut: $4.9 million

In a typical offseason with a significant cap increase, the New Orleans Saints would likely keep Malcom Brown without question. However, the club is $69.5 million over the salary-cap threshold, which means the front office will cut some good players.

Brown doesn’t play a premium position, so the Saints may release him to clear some cap space. He only has one year left on his contract.

With Johnathan Hankins on an expiring deal, the Raiders can add a younger run-stuffing defensive lineman to the group. Brown, a 2015 first-rounder, has provided stout run defense through six seasons, logging 247 tackles, 23 for loss. He’s also recorded 23 quarterback hits and 11.5 sacks.

For the most part, Brown has played close to 50 percent of the defensive snaps every year in the league. He’s not going to get his hands on the quarterback a lot, but the Raiders must address their 24th-ranked run defense.

Ideally, Vegas should pursue New York Giants’ impending free-agent Dalvin Tomlinson for this role, but Brown would list as a solid alternative.
