Raiders: 10 cut candidates to keep an eye on

  • Edge Dee Ford, San Francisco 49ers
  • Cap savings if cut: $15.3 million (post-June 1 cut if healthy)

Dee Ford’s availability could come down to a physical examination. He has an $11.6 million guarantee for injury if the San Francisco 49ers release him, which is notable because the 29-year-old only played one game during the 2020 campaign because of a back issue.

However, if Ford passes his physical, the 49ers can designate him as a post-June 1 cut and save $15.3 million. That’s very likely if the edge rusher’s medicals check out.

In 2019, Ford signed a five-year, $85 million contract but only suited up 12 games over the last two terms. He played a role in the 49ers’ dominant defense that helped lead the team to a Super Bowl LIV appearance, recording 16 quarterback pressures and 6.5 sacks, but couldn’t stay healthy to fulfill lofty expectations on a lucrative deal.

The Raiders should avoid injury-plagued players at a steep price. Nonetheless, Mayock could land Ford on a cheap or incentive-laden deal if he hits the open market with his recent injury history.

Ford can undoubtedly rush the passer; he just needs to stay on the field.
