Raiders: 10 cut candidates to keep an eye on
- OG Alex Lewis, New York Jets
- Cap savings if cut: $6 million (post-June 1 cut)
Alex Lewis had a rocky 2020 season with the New York Jets that resulted in the team placing him on the NFI list in December.
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets benched Lewis, who had a “heated exchange” with head coach Adam Gase. With Robert Saleh’s coaching staff taking over, the veteran guard could survive roster cuts, but the new regime could look for an upgrade with $67.9 million in cap space.
Vegas should add someone to challenge John Simpson for the starting left guard spot if the team cuts Incognito to save cash. Denzelle Good isn’t a lock to return on a new deal.
At 28 years old, Lewis has a fair amount of starting experience, opening 39 contests with the first-stringers. He’s better in run blocking than pass-blocking sets, though relatively solid in both areas.
Gruden and his staff could have an open competition at left guard in training camp, bringing out the best in the candidates for the starting job.
