2021 NFL Draft: Edge rushers the Las Vegas Raiders should target

Patrick Jones II, Pittsburgh

Like Ronnie Perkins, Patrick Jones II is a balanced defensive end that is capable of making an impact against both the run and pass. Standing at 6’5 and 260-pounds, Jones has ideal size for a defensive end and finished his college career with two productive seasons in a row for the Pittsburgh defense.

In 2019, Jones recorded 41 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, and 8.5 sacks. In 2020 his tallies slightly improved finishing with 42 tackles, 12.5 tackles for a loss, and 9.0 sacks.

Jones has a quick first step, explosion off the snap, a plethora of rush moves, decent bend, and a strong bull-rush. One area Jones needs to improve is his extension. Jones may lack length but he can still extend and use the length he does have which can allow him to win at first-contact more often. Jones could also stand to see better hand usage and technique.

Jones is mostly solid against the run but his instincts can be hit-and-miss at times. Still, he was able to consistently hold the edge and make splash plays behind the line at the collegiate level.

Gus Bradley employs a 4-3 defense and Jones is a pure 4-3 defensive end without much experience dropping back into coverage so he is a scheme fit. As a likely 2nd or 3rd round pick, Jones has the potential to step in day one as a 3-down edge rusher if the Raiders are looking to go that route early.
