Raiders and Seattle Seahawks: Trade No. 1

  • Seattle Receives: QB Derek Carr, 2021 1st Round Pick, 2023 1st Round Pick, G John Simpson
  • Las Vegas Receives: QB Russell Wilson, 2021 4th Round Pick

The first trade scenario here is interesting for both sides. The Raiders, obviously, would receive Wilson, but receiving the 4th round pick would soften the blow a bit of the immense draft capital that the Raiders would be trading away.

Two 1st round picks are not easy to part with, so Gruden and Mayock would have to be all in on Wilson here.

For Seattle, this trade gives them an immediate replacement for Wilson at QB quarterback, as well as a couple first-round picks to give them even more flexibility in the future.

When trading away a franchise quarterback, it is essential to have a clear path to the replacement, and Carr is a pretty darn good replacement, especially a short-term one. Carr also has one of the most team-friendly deals in the entire league as a quarterback, excluding rookie deals, basically on a pay-as-you-go contract.

In any trade scenario involving the Raiders acquiring Wilson from Seattle, Carr would have to be moved for the salary to work. Unless there is a third team involved, Wilson becoming a Raider would almost certainly result in Carr becoming a Seahawk.

This deal also would give Seattle a young, cheap starting offensive guard in John Simpson. Simpson will be entering his second year this season and is a former fourth-round pick out of Clemson, where he was an All-American. All in all, this trade would give John Schnieder and Pete Carroll two starting players, as well as two 1st round picks, opportunities to improve their roster even further.
