3. Sam Adams – Oakland Raiders, 2002
Sam Adams is one of the most recognizable players from the mid-90’s and 2000’s thanks to his lengthy career and trademark appearance as one of the biggest players on the field. Adams was listed at 6’3″, 350 and was nicknamed “The Man Mountain” because of his imposing stature.
The former Texas A&M Aggie was drafted 8th overall in the 1994 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks and spent 6 years there before he starting bouncing around the league. After two Pro Bowl seasons with Baltimore and a victory in Super Bowl XXXV, he chose to sign with the Oakland Raiders and helped lead the team’s only dominant defense since the turn of the century.
Adams was a central figure in the middle of a defense that helped the Raiders make their way to Super Bowl XXXVII and though his raw stats don’t jump out he anchored the third best rush defense in the NFL. He chose to move on to the Buffalo Bills after his sole season in Oakland and played another five years before his final season in 2007 with the Denver Broncos.
Even though he was an interior defensive lineman, Adams still racked up impressive sack totals with 44 in 14 years and 400 tackles over that same span. He was remarkably durable and rarely missed than 1-2 games per season which is impressive considering the punishment he took at his position.
Sam Adams likely won’t be making the Hall of Fame but he played in two Super Bowls and was a memorable and talented player that stuck around in the NFL for nearly 15 years.
