Las Vegas Raiders late-round QB targets

Jamie Newman, Wake Forest

Jaime Newman is such an interesting prospect to me.  Coming into the 2020 season, Newman had played most of two seasons for the Demon Deacons, and he already had crept into the top-five of all-time passing touchdowns for the University with 35 total for his career.  Most of them came in 2019 where he had 26 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions.

Before he opted out of the 2020 season, as many players did due to COVID concerns, he was a graduate transfer for Georgia and was likely going to be the starter.  If he had gone and played well for Georgia, I believe Newman would’ve been up there with some of the top quarterbacks in this draft.

Newman not only has the arm strength to make any throw at the next level, but also has the athleticism, and escapability needed in this era of the NFL.

This is a kid who has the arm talent to be a very successful quarterback at the next level, and the few things he would need to improve on is reading the field, as, like most college programs, he ran mostly a one-read offense, but still showed the capabilities to work through progressions when needed.

Newman also needs some improvement with his footwork, as sometimes it can get sloppy and cause some inaccuracies.  I would love to see the Raiders take Newman with a Day 3 pick if he is still available and let him develop under Derek Carr, and if Carr eventually cannot get the job done, I feel comfortable with Gruden grooming a young player with as much natural talent as he has.
