The last time the Raiders signed an offensive lineman from the Kansas City Chiefs it worked out pretty well as Rodney Hudson became perhaps the best player on the team and one of the best in the league. The Raiders may now turn their eyes to bringing in another former Chief in Mitchell Schwartz.
Schwartz was a second-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2012 and after 4 years where he did not miss a single snap, he signed a five-year, $33 million contract with the Chiefs. In 5 years with the Chiefs, Schwartz has been one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL having been named First-Team All-Pro once and Second-Team All-Pro 3 times, most recently in 2019.
The 2020 season was difficult for Schwartz as he missed most of the season with a back injury that he suffered in Week 6 and was placed on injured reserve several weeks later. He had surgery and by all accounts appears to be ready to return for the 2021 season after being released by the Chiefs.

Many believe that the Raiders will be drafting a tackle early in the draft but they could still sign Schwartz to a short-term deal and use the rookie as a swing tackle until he is ready to start. There is always a risk of reinjury when dealing with back issues but Schwartz has been a model of consistency and durability and would be a welcome change from the rollercoaster that was the Trent Brown experience.
