2021 NFL Draft: 3 ideal picks at No. 17 for the Las Vegas Raiders

Trevon Moehrig, SAF – Texas Christian

The Raiders have a priority need to add a free safety with range to play single high in Gus Bradley’s newly installed scheme. Although Moehrig played in a predominately 2-high defense at TCU, he has put enough range, ball skills, and skillful footwork on tape to make the transition easy to project.

Moehrig also adds value with best-in-class man coverage skills at the safety position. With Johnathan Abram‘s struggles in that area, Moehrig would be a perfect complement to Abram’s hard-hitting style. The Raiders could mix and match which safety would play over the TE; Abram in run situations and Moehrig in passing situations.

Jon Gruden went on record saying the Raiders passed on Derwin James in 2018 because they had already invested enough draft picks in the secondary, it would be tough to stomach if the Raiders did that again. If the Raiders can get better in the secondary, the defense as a whole is going to be much improved over last season.
