2021 NFL Draft: Three Day 3 QBs the Las Vegas Raiders should target

851. . QB. Longhorns . Sam Ehlinger. 2. player

Sam Ehlinger is one of those QBs that does not have the measurables but gets the most out of his physical gifts with toughness and tenacity. Originally a four-star recruit coming out of high school, Ehlinger was ranked as the number 4 dual-threat QB and that was on full display with Texas.

Ehlinger was a four-year starter with the Longhorns and has started 43 games in his college career. He has thrown for 11,436 yards, 94 touchdowns to 27 interceptions, and rushed for 1,907 yards and 33 touchdowns. The production levels are high due to his long tenure as the starter but he has two seasons with 34 and 41 total touchdowns which is a great achievement regardless of tenure.

This dual-threat ability makes him an intriguing prospect despite his physical limitations and his experience could allow him to be ready straight away as a backup or spot starter. Jon Gruden loves QBs that can move and just like the others on this list, Ehlinger has that ability to extend plays and do damage on designed runs.

It may be unoriginal to compare him to a fellow undersized Longhorn in Colt McCoy but if that is Ehlinger’s comp then he is well worth a late-round pick. McCoy has been a solid backup for years after a glittering college career and the Raiders could certainly use Ehlinger’s similar talents as a long-term backup to Derek Carr.
