The Las Vegas Raiders need a free safety, and they got a special player in the second round, adding Trevon Moehrig from TCU.

After making a shocking selection in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders went into the second round looking to make a move for the defensive side of the ball. Alex Leatherwood, the No. 17 overall pick, is going to fill the void at right tackle on offense, and their selection at No. 43, Trevon Moehrig, fills a major void in the secondary.

The Raiders had to trade up to get Moehrig, who many felt was the best overall safety in this draft class. While he was the second safety selected, as Jevon Holland went a few picks earlier, he is a player who fits their scheme perfectly and will join a very young defensive backfield for Gus Bradley.

Raiders fill a major void at safety

While the Raiders used a first-round pick on a safety in Johnathan Abram a few years back, and Karl Joseph was brought back this offseason, safety was still a concern heading into the draft. In fact, the roster did not have a true free safety on the roster, which is the spot that Moehrig will slide in and fill as a rookie.

The Raiders had one of the better offenses in football this past season, finishing in the top-10, but the defense was downright atrocious. In fact, if the defense was even decent in 2020, you have to believe the Silver and Black would have been a playoff team, but instead, they missed out on the postseason once again.

The additions of Joseph and Moehrig at safety, and Yannick Ngakoue up front along the edge could give them the talent they need to turn the corner on that side of the ball.

With news coming down that the Broncos could be in play for MVP Aaron Rodgers, getting a player like Moehrig was an absolute must. He is going to fill a major void on this roster, as the Raiders continue to revamp the defensive backfield heading into the 2021 season.
