2021 NFL Draft: Grading how the Las Vegas Raiders addressed their needs
Need Addressed: Secondary
Gruden and Mayock hit it out of the park with their defensive back picks. The first guy they got was TCU safety Tre’von Moehrig, who was Las Vegas’ top-ranked safety in the draft. Moehrig is a true center fielder, who uses his instincts and football IQ to make plays on the football.
This was evident during his time at TCU, where he finished his career with seven interceptions and 11 pass breakups. Moehrig will be the cover safety that Las Vegas desperately needed in 2020.
Las Vegas also grabbed Tyree Gillespie and Nate Hobbs on Day 3. Gillespie is an absolute enforcer at the strong safety position that offers physicality on every down. He’ll likely play under Jonathan Abrams, and with Bradley occasionally having three safeties on the field, Gillespie should get some snaps as a run-stuffing safety.
Hobbs isn’t the flashiest back in this draft. During his four-year career in Illinois, Hobbs only logged in four interceptions, one fumble recovery, and 11 passes defended. What isn’t shown on the stat sheet is his ability to work and improve his game at all times.
Hobbs, who could end up being a great option at outside corner in Vegas, will have and need time to work under Damon Arnette, Trayvon Mullen, and the rest of the secondary.
Grade: A+
