Raiders roster: 2021 Post-minicamp 53-man roster prediction

Safety

  • SS: Johnathan Abrams, Karl Joseph, Tyreese Gillespie
  • FS: Trevon Moehrig, Dallin Leavitt

Johnathan Abrams and Trevon Moehrig will be the starting duo at safety, and both are young players who will be expected to play at a high level in 2021. Expect Abrams to mostly be playing a box safety role, similar to Kam Chancellor or Jamal Adams, with the hope that he can turn the corner in Year 3. He’ll really have to clean up his tackling if he hopes to avoid injury with his arm tackling.

Moehrig is going to be the team’s centerfielder out at safety. He may have a few bumps in the road when he starts as rookies often do, but he should be a great playmaker for the team. This is a player who the team traded up to get, and everyone is expecting him to come in and be a playmaker from Day 1.

Also this offseason, the Raiders brought back Karl Joseph, who was playing his best football for the team before leaving for Cleveland via free agency after the 2019 season. Maybe he saw Abram was the future, but with Abram faltering last year, do not be surprised if Kujo starts a bit in 2021.

Tyree Gillespie and Dallin Leavitt are all depth guys who will likely be worked in when Bradley runs his three safety sets. Of course, they’ll likely also be used on special teams so that they can use their speed and tackling for the team.
