The Raiders defense in 2020 wasn’t bad, it was downright horrible, especially in the secondary. During this year’s 2021 NFL Draft, Mike Mayock, Gus Bradley, and Jon Gruden sat down and worked to build the secondary into something respectable.
In the second round, the Raiders moved up to draft Trevon Moehrig out of TCU to play free safety. Moehrig, a physical defensive back with natural ball instincts and sideline to sideline capabilities looks to be a perfect fit at centerfield to cover the top of Gus Bradley’s defense. Bradley, who has had tremendous success with young defensive backs in the past, is excited about the addition of Moehrig and how quickly he is picking up the defense as well as becoming a young vocal leader in the Raiders locker room.
Moehrig has the tools to compete for not only Raiders’ Rookie of the Year honors but could be a prime candidate to be the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021. With Moehrig in the secondary and the hopeful improvements by Johnathan Abram, the Raiders could have an outstanding, young duo at safety, something that could significantly change the narrative when it comes to this defense.
