Marcus Mariota, QB

Since landing with the Las Vegas Raiders before the 2020 NFL season, many in the fan base have called for Marcus Mariota to supplant Derek Carr as the team’s starting quarterback. Mariota playing so well against the Los Angeles Chargers in relief of Carr last season did not put out those fires, and he is going to have his supporters once again in 2021, his second season as Carr’s backup.

There is no real quarterback controversy here, as no matter how many rumors swirl about Carr, Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock are standing behind him. After restructuring his deal this offseason, Mariota is likely playing his last season in the Silver and Black and has likely done enough to prove he deserves a shot as a starter somewhere else in 2022.

In today’s NFL, you need a strong backup quarterback, and the Raiders have had the luxury of having Mariota as their No. 2 since the last offseason. Las Vegas will have to find another backup in 2022, and who knows, maybe they already have him on the roster in Gruden’s favorite Nathan Peterman.
