Las Vegas Raiders: 5 players set to turn heads at 2021 training camp
Damon Arnette – Cornerback
Similar to Johnathan Abram, Damon Arnette has plenty of fire and aggression that lead to some nice plays but plenty of mistakes as well. For every open-field tackle, he made on a bigger player, he would make a mistake in coverage or injure himself by not using proper technique when going in for a tackle.
To be fair to Arnette, he had a difficult offseason and regular season dealing with injuries and COVID so we can give him a mulligan for 2020 but the coaching staff knows he has to be better in 2021. To help with this and to light that same fire under Arnette, the Raiders brought in veteran Casey Hayward as the presumed starter opposite Trayvon Mullen due to his familiarity with the scheme and track record of success.
Hayward will likely hold on to that starting spot but Arnette will have plenty of chances to beat him out and even if not, he can elevate himself as the starter at nickel corner which he played at Ohio State before playing on the outside. Having Arnette on the field even at nickel corner will be ideal as it will give him more experience and playing time which is crucial for his development.
Again much like Abram, we will get to see how quickly Arnette has improved during this offseason and how he will react to having his starting place threatened by a veteran player like Hayward and even Rasul Douglas. Competition brings out the best in players and if Arnette is the “dog” that the Raiders believed he was then he should shine in training camp.
