Trevon Moehrig – Free Safety
When was the last time the Raiders had a real talent at the free safety position? You can go back to the 2016 season for a slight uptick in talent in Pro Bowler Reggie Nelson but the years before that are bleak, even with Hall of Famer Charles Woodson making a cameo appearance at the position as well.
In fact, the last time the Raiders had an All-Pro player at the position was in 2002 when Rod Woodson had eight interceptions and 82 tackles as a 37-year-old. Trevon Moehrig won’t be measured up to that standard just yet but having a player of his caliber on the roster should turn heads straight away considering the lack of talent at the position in recent years.
For all their hard work, the likes of Erik Harris and Dallin Leavitt are not at the standard needed to be successful in today’s NFL.
Moehrig is already getting great reviews for his play in minicamp and Gus Bradley has a great track record of getting the best from safeties in his defensive scheme. He is being lauded by some as the best move of the offseason for the Raiders and looks to be a difference-maker right away. The rookie from TCU is one of the favorites for the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year award and we will get to see what he’s made of early in the preseason and training camp.
