Tight End: Foster Moreau
This may seem harsh to the young tight end but Foster Moreau does indeed have something to prove in 2021. After Jon Gruden made the decision to bring in Jason Witten, we saw many of Moreau’s snaps handed over to the veteran even though it was clear that there was not much left in the tank.
Many of us thought Gruden brought in Witten for some veteran leadership and mentorship but he ended up playing far too many snaps for our liking.
The main issue was that when Witten was on the field, usually Foster Moreau was not. After a great start to his career with five touchdowns in 13 games, an ACL injury cut his rookie season short but he was able to return for the 2020 season. Unfortunately due to the addition of Witten his snap counts on offense dropped from close to 400 to just 250 and his numbers suffered.
His yardage totals were close but he had a third of the receptions and just two touchdowns in 16 games.
With Witten retiring once again we get to see much more of Moreau and one would assume that he would take all of those snaps as the clear number two tight end. Jon Gruden still loves Derek Carrier as a versatile player but Moreau will be the second tight end in two TE sets and should get the snaps when Darren Waller needs a breather.
The former LSU star has shown that he can make contested catches, break tackles in the open field, and present a matchup nightmare in the red zone so we can’t wait to see what he will do with an expanded role in the offense.
