Las Vegas Raiders: 5 players trending up at 2021 training camp

No. 2: DT Darius Philon

Darius Philon is a player that has not taken a regular-season snap in the NFL since 2018 due to legal issues but according to reports he has flashed some solid ability and is a favorite to make the 53-man roster. Philon played for Gus Bradley in San Diego primarily as a rotation player and he has been a surprise performer in camp.

Bradley and Gruden reportedly discussed adding him while watching film this offseason and he was brought in for a tryout and eventually signed a one-year deal worth close to $1 million but with nothing guaranteed. This deal was strictly a prove-it situation where Philon gets a chance to make it back in the league after a three-year layoff and the Raiders could get a solid player for a bit more than the veteran minimum.

According to SI’s Hondo Carpenter, Philon is in the mix as a backup defensive tackle and could be one of 10 defensive lineman that the Raiders keep on the 53-man roster. We have seen teams like Tampa Bay and San Francisco have great success with heavy rotations on the defensive line and it appears the Raiders are looking at that as the most clear-cut path to improving the defense.
