Las Vegas Raiders: 5 players trending up at 2021 training camp

No. 4: SS Johnathan Abram

Speaking of players that can be playmakers when used correctly, safety Johnathan Abram has reportedly been one of the highlights of training camp with his approach to the game and maturity. After a difficult season where he was on the wrong end of several big plays and high profile mistakes, Abram is looking to have a bounce back season under a staff that knows how to use him.

SI.com quoted Bradley on his thoughts on Abram and he had nothing but good things to say about his young safety. Bradley said:

"“He’s done a good job. Very much a student of the game, a guy that takes a lot of pride and does not want to make mistakes on the field and wants to understand it so well that he understands all the positions so he can be part of that accountability group that can hold each other accountable.” Source: SI.com"

It’s refreshing to hear the word accountability when it comes to Abram because he has been anything but in his brief playing time so far. For every big hit or pass breakup that Abram had, he would follow it up with a mistake in coverage, a penalty, or a reckless play that injures him or one of his teammates.

As a leader on this defense, Abram has to learn to control his aggression and make smarter players and he appears to be doing just that. Abram is penciled in as the starter but he knows that Karl Joseph and perhaps even rookie Tyree Gillespie will be breathing down his neck after a rough season and summer full of criticism.
