Las Vegas Raiders: 5 players trending up at 2021 training camp

No. 5: WR Zay Jones

Zay Jones looked to be on his way out of town after the end of a 2020 season where he made minimal impact on the stat sheet with just 14 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown. His entire season numbers looked like a good single-game performance for some of the top receivers in the league but he was still able to earn a one-year extension with a salary of $2.5 million fully guaranteed.

Jon Gruden loves Jones and his knowledge of the system is a big plus and he appears to be one of the early stars in training camp. The Athletic’s Vic Tafur reported that Jones was making highlight-reel plays every day in camp and Gruden talked up his versatility and toughness. He said of Jones, as quoted by The Athletic, “He can play X, he can play Z, he can play anywhere on our offense, honestly. He’s versatile, he’s tough, he’s smart and he’s a great competitor, so … I wouldn’t count him out”.

With the Raiders likely carrying six receivers we can see that the spots are all spoken for with Jones likely joining Henry Ruggs, Bryan Edwards, Hunter Renfrow, John Brown, and Willie Snead as the players filling out the roster. We expected this after Jones was given the fully guaranteed deal but there was always a chance he could have been beaten out by one of the undrafted players the Raiders brought in but his experience and versatility have given him the edge so far.
